Description
This Selmer Super Balanced Action silver alto saxophone is in fantastic condition with 95% or more of the original silver plating. It has just come from the shop where it was cleaned, adjusted and re-padded, so it plays wonderfully. This saxophone features the articulated low F# key, along with the high F key and Selmer’s signature ring brace. There is evidence that a small dent was taken out of the bow and on the back of the body below the left-hand thumb rest. These do not impact the tone hole near where the dent removal was done. There was also light dent removal done further up the body on the same side of the horn. It has a tiny ding near the bottom bell key. The serial number is “48176” making this a 1951 vintage alto saxophone. Above the serial number is engraved “Made in France Brev. S.G.D.G. No 383.098 ENGL. PAT. No 11.824 U.S. Patent No 2.090.011.”. The engraving on the bell is super crisp and reads “Brevete France & Etranger” after that the words “Henri Selmer Paris” are engraved in laurel leaves and finally the words “Sole Agents U.S. & CAN. Selmer New-York. Elkhart Made in France.” This alto saxophone comes with the original “H. Selmer Paris” neck that is also in excellent condition and has no evidence of a pull down. It also comes in a new Selmer case. No mouthpiece is included.
Selmer’s Balanced Actions, Super Balanced Actions and Mark VI’s are the Stradivarius of saxophones. At the end of the day deciding which to buy is a little like picking between a Lamborghini or a Ferrari. It is really a matter of preference. For this particular horn, we can tell you that it has that rich, dark, iconic Selmer sound. These are not Yamahas that are cranked out; each saxophone has its own character and presence that is almost impossible to describe on paper. It has to be heard; it has to be felt.
