This Selmer Mark VI Tenor Saxophone Serial #M81961 is in very good condition with 50-60% of the original lacquer. It has just come from the shop where it was cleaned, adjusted and repadded so it plays wonderfully. A few minor dents have been taken out of the bow and the tension ring on the neck was resoldered but currently, there are no dents on the horn or evidence of any major repairs. The serial number is M.81961 making this a 1959-60 vintage tenor saxophone. Above the serial number is engraved “Made in France Brev. S.G.D.G. 920653 ENGL PAT 632799 US PAT 2940640 US PAT 2710558.” The engraving on the bell is still crisp despite some lacquer wear. The words “Brevete France & Etranger” is engraved at the top of the bell followed by “Henri Selmer Paris” engraved in laurel leaves. After that is “Fabrique en France par H. Selmer & Cie Place Dancourt Paris Selmer New York Elkhart London Made in France” with the R trademark sign. This tenor saxophone comes with the original “H. Selmer Paris” neck that is also in good condition and has no evidence of a pulldown. It also comes in a new Selmer case. No mouthpiece is included. This saxophone really has a great sound.
Selmer’s Balanced Actions, Super Balanced Actions and Mark VI’s are the Stradivarius of Saxophones. At the end of the day deciding which to buy is a little like picking between a Lamborghini or a Ferrari. It’s really a matter of preference. Check out the video below to hear this saxophone.
