Description
This Selmer Mark VI tenor saxophone is in very good condition with 50-55% of the original lacquer. There have been multiple re-solders throughout the horn with key guards, body posts, and the bottom thumb rest. Someone has scratched some letters on the bow guard, above the serial number, and on the neck. Please see the photos for more details. There are some very minor dings at the top of the body as well as towards the bottom of the body but nothing major. The serial number is “M99233” making this a 1962 vintage tenor saxophone. Above the serial number is engraved “Made in France Brev. SGDG. 920653 US. PAT. 2940640 US. PAT. 2710558 US. PAT. 2846917”. The engraving on the bell reads “Henri Selmer Paris” engraved in laurel leaves and “Selmer New-York. Elkhart London Made in France” with the R trademark sign. Scrolling leaves surround the engraving and go down and around the bell. This tenor saxophone comes with the original “H. Selmer Paris” neck with the Selmer “S” on the octave key. The neck has almost no finish remaining on it and does show some signs of a slight pull-down. There is a ding in the side of the neck almost parallel to the saddle. It also comes in an older used replacement case. No mouthpiece is included.
Selmer’s Balanced Actions, Super Balanced Actions, and Mark VI’s are the Stradivarius of saxophones. At the end of the day deciding which to buy is a little like picking between a Lamborghini or a Ferrari. It is really a matter of preference. For this particular horn, we can tell you that it has that rich, dark, iconic Selmer sound. These are not Yamahas that are cranked out; each saxophone has its own character and presence that is almost impossible to describe on paper. It has to be heard; it has to be felt.
