Description
This Selmer Mark VI baritone saxophone is in good condition with 75-80% of the lacquer finish remaining and light player wear over the horn. There is a key guard missing right above the lower thumb rest that is not included. There has been some spot re-lacquering done at braces and at the bell-to-body brace. As you can see in pictures someone scratched some letters into the bell near the engraving. The brace from the body to the neck receiver is missing it screw to hold the brace in place and it is not included. Please see pictures for details. The serial number appears alongside the patent numbers at the bottom of the body near the bow. It reads “Made in France BREV. S.G.D.G. No 383.098 ENGL. PAT. No 11.824 U.S. PATENT No 2.710.558” and then the serial number “M188194”. The serial number makes this a 1971 vintage horn. The engraving on the bell reads “Henri Selmer Paris” engraved between laurel leaves and then the words “Selmer Made in France”. The neck is not original and is a 80 Super Action neck. It is in mint condition. This baritone saxophone comes in an older used condition case. No mouthpiece is included. This saxophone plays with the classic Mark VI vibrant sound with fantastic overtones and great intonation.
Selmer’s Balanced Actions, Super Balanced Actions and Mark VI’s are the Stradivarius of saxophones. At the end of the day deciding which to buy is a little like picking between a Lamborghini or a Ferrari. It is really a matter of preference. For this particular horn, we can tell you that it has that rich, dark, iconic Selmer sound. These are not Yamahas that are cranked out; each saxophone has its own character and presence that is almost impossible to describe on paper. It has to be heard; it has to be felt.
