Description

This Martin The Indiana alto saxophone is in excellent condition with around 90% of the original lacquer and light speckle wear across the horn. It has just come from the shop where it was cleaned and adjusted and re-padded, so it plays great.  The horn has the signature tapered Martin beveled tone holes and an adjustable right-hand thumb hook and the heart shaped left-hand thumb rest. There is a tiny dent in engraving on the front of the bow that is easier felt than seen. There is an extremely minor dent just to the left of the serial number and at the bottom of the body where the key guard has been slightly pushed in. All of the dents mentioned are extremely superficial. There are a couple of nearly invisible dings on the back of the bow on the leg side that you can feel as you move your hand along the bow.  The lacquer wear is mostly on the back of the body and there has been a key guard re-soldered on the back. The serial number “69977”, can be found on both the back of the body and the neck and makes this a late 1940’s early 1950’s vintage horn. We cannot date it any closer than that since “The Indiana” had its own serial numbers and their general time period can be figured out with serial numbers and keywork. This is a first phase Indiana due to the right thumb hook and the heart-shaped left thumb rest. The engraving is still nice and sharp. There is an Indian head with 3 arrows and then scrolling leaves that run down the entirety of the bell and onto the bow. The words “The Indiana by Martin Elkhart-IND” are featured prominently. This horn comes with the original neck that has no evidence of a pull down and comes with its metal neck plug. It also comes in a replacement case in very good condition. A mouthpiece is not included. This alto saxophone has a warm, big sound that is iconic in Martin horns. It plays beautifully in both the upper and lower register and has fantastic intonation.
