Description

This Lyon & Healy “Own-Make” shepherd’s crook silver cornet is in beautiful condition with 98%+ of the silver finish and 50-55% of the copper bell wash. It just came back from the shop where the original silver plating was given a good polishing. There is a slight wave to the edge of the bell and light evidence of dent removal in the bell and back bell bow.  The third valve tuning slide is missing both of its pull knobs. Please see pictures for details. It has a serial number of “2824” making it a 1903 vintage horn. The engraving on the bell is clean and crisp of leaves entwining with a bow at the bottom in the center are the words “No 2286 Lyon & Healy “Own-Make” Chicago U.S.A.”. On the back of the second valve casing, there is also a small engraving which says “Lyon & Healy MFRS. Chicago”. This cornet has a removable lead pipe.  It would have originally had two lead pipes – one for Bb and one for A.  This horn has the Bb lead pipe. It has a double spit key and a copper washed bell. In our research we found that Lyon & Healy did not always match the serial number on the bell to the serial number on the valve casing.  In this instance the serial number on the bell is “2286” and the serial number on the valve casing is “2824”.  Our research indicated that this was normal and not mis-matched.  No mouthpiece is included with the cornet and it comes in a good used replacement case. This cornet has a beautiful sound! It projects very well and plays with good intonation.  The valves have fantastic action to them and all of the tuning slides are easily pulled.  This is a really fun horn to play especially when you consider the life it has lived over 100+ years.
