Description
This Bach Mercury Mt. Vernon cornet is in fantastic condition for a vintage instrument. It has just come back from the shop where it was cleaned and adjusted. The horn has approximately 90-95% of its original lacquered finish remaining with general player wear across the horn. This is mostly concentrated on the throat of the bell and at the edge of the bell flair near the rim. The first valve tuning slide is missing its pull knob. The bell does have some wave to it and it shows medium evidence of bell dent removal. Please see pictures for details. The serial number is “14653” which is quite unusual for a Mercury model. Most Bach Mercury models were made in either 1939 with serial numbers in the “10,000” or in 1954-55 with serials between “30,000-33,000”. However, Bach serial numbers were different for the Mercury model. For the rest of his horns, a serial number in the “14,000”‘s would mean an instrument was made between 1953-1956. Thus, our best guess is that this cornet was given a general serial number instead of a Mercury serial number making this a unique collector’s cornet. The engraving on the bell is still crisp and reads “Mercury Model Vincent Bach Corporation Mt. Vernon New York U.S.A.”. The valve casing has the serial number on one side and the engraving “V. Bach Mt. Vernon N.Y. U.S.A.” on the other side. The horn comes in an original Bach case with the original badge all of which are still in good condition. The badge is off the case and is included in the case. It also comes with the original “Vincent Bach Corp. Mt. Vernon N.Y. 12C” mouthpiece. This horn has the classic dark, rich Bach sound with excellent intonation and beautiful overtones. It plays great from top to bottom with a nice solid core sound in every register. The trumpet has a nice response and balances well in your hand.
